    4. Repeater Report [Ray Montagne - W7CIA]

Gas discharge tubes in all lightning arrestors installed at both the Brundage Mt. and No Business Mt. repeater need to be ordered and changed out.

      • No Business Mt. VHF/2m Repeater

On Tuesday, July 5th, Larry Stokes (N7IBC) and Ray Montagne (W7CIA) made a trip to No Business Mt. to set the deviation levels on the 33cm link back-bone and to assess the repeater performance prior to the July public service communications events. During the assessment phase, it was determined that the repeater transmitter, which is configured for an output of 25-watts, had an output level of less than 3-watts.

With the change-over to the Kenwood TK-750, cabinet reconfiguration and wiring harnesses makes it difficult to install discrete radios (i.e. separate receiver, transmitter and outboard power amplifier) to provide communications services while servicing the TK-750. Service cannot be performed on the hilltop. Rather than take the repeater completely out of service so close to the McCall Trail Running Classic event, it was decided to leave the repeater up and running at current power levels.

Lastly, It is not known how long the No Business Mt. repeater has been operating with a failed transmitter power amplifier. If you are a repeater user, and notice an obvious decrease in received signal strength, or can no longer get into the repeater in places where it was very easy to do so previously, please advise CIARC leadership. We cannot fix it if we do not know it is broken.

Ray Montagne asked that the membership consider purchasing a Yaesu DR-1X repeater as a spare that can be swapped into service when repairs are required of installed equipment. Ray also asked that a Micor Squelch Gate be purchased to be installed in the DR-1X. Yaesu has restrated the DR-1X promotional program, as of July 1st, with current prices set at $600. This promotional program ends on September 30th. A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to approve up to $1000.00 for the purchase of a Yaesu DR-1X backup repeater.

After this motion was passed, a DR-1X order form, that has technical data filled in, was given to Bob Renn to facilitate placing an order. Ray Montagne ordered the Micor Squelch Gate immediately after the meeting, and received the squelch gate on July 14th.

      • Brundage Mt. VHF/2m Repeater

Brundage Mt. needs to have the 33cm link deviation levels balanced out with the rest of the CIARC network. Ideally, this would happen before the MCTRC event on July 16th. Since the 4-Summit challenge is most likely to require the linking facilities be operating correctly (with Brundage Mt. and the W7CIA repeaters supporting the course), having the linking balanced prior to that event is deemed to be critical.

Because of how the Brundage Mt. equipment is installed, it requires some agility and strength to move the equipment from the installed location to a position where work can be performed. We need volunteers to assist with this task.

        • Scheduled Required Maintenance

          • Adjust 33cm Link Receiver audio level to produce 4.5 kHz deviation at 2m transmitter
          • Install Micor Squelch Gate between Yaesu Fusion Repeater Receiver (discriminator output) and Arcom Repeater Controller
          • Install 33cm Yagi with Radome and orient antenna toward the link hub that is located at No Business Mt.
      • W7CIA VHF/2m Repeater

The W7CIA UHF/70cm repeater, which operated on 441.925 MHz, has been permanently taken out of service, as has the CIARC 2-Meter Satellite Receiver, co-located with the W7CIA repeater. This has been replaced with a new W7CIA VHF/2-meter repeater that is operating on 146.960 MHz with a minus offset and access tone of 123.0 Hz. The move to VHF should present a significantly larger coverage foot print (i.e. approximately 4X to 5X the area) than the previous UHF/70cm repeater. Both the W7CIA UHF/70cm and the CIAR2S (i.e. CIARC 2-meter satellite receiver) should be removed from radio programmed channels, and the new W7CIA VHF/2m repeater should be added to radio programmed channels.

The W7CIA VHF/2m repeater is linked full-time with the CIARC repeaters. This new repeater will provide the best choice of channels when south of Little Donner. It will also provide the best choice of channels for the Clear Creek Summit aid station and start / finish line for the 4-Summit Challenge, with the start / finish line experiencing hand-held coverage.

Assistance with programming will be made available at both CIARC and VCSAR meetings. Unless you are an active Public Safety officer (i.e. LEO, Fire, EMS/EMT), do not call Ray Montagne to request a personal programming session as Ray's schedule cannot accommodate these requests.

Central Idaho Amateur Radio Club members should log-in to their account and then visit this page to view contact information for Ray Montagne (W7CIA) . If you are not a CIARC member, please use the contact form to make an inquiry by clicking here.

Ray Montagne will receive the final roster of race registrants early next week. The roster data will be reformatted by Ray to create time-sheets used to both report and track runners through an aid station. This will then be sent via email to all volunteers. Ray also reports that he will have one printed copy per aid station, available for pick up at the start / finish line the morning of the race. Any volunteer picking up a roster at the start / finish line will need to do so early enough that they can still arrive at their assigned aid station by the time indicated in the table above.

Upon initial check-in of an aid station, the morning of the event, the aid station can expect to have additions, deletions and changes to the roster relayed to the aid station from the NET control station at the starting line.

Stations that are unable to hear the No Business Mt. repeater should expect to move to either the Brundage Mt. repeater or to the W7CIA repeater.

Central Idaho Amateur Radio Club members should log-in to their account and then visit this page to view contact information for Ray Montagne (W7CIA) . If you are not a CIARC member, please use the contact form to make an inquiry by clicking here.

    10. Meeting Venue Change [Richard Wagner - W7ELE]

Richard reports investigating several sites that would provide a suitable meeting venue with internet access. Elk Creek Church has wifi access, is free of fees, but has a small room that may not be suitable for our needs. Mountain Life Church also has wifi access, has a suitable sized room, requests a donation (amount not specified) but there are concerns that the room may not always be accessible. Richard is continuing to investigate and will report further at the August meeting.

    11. Valley County ARES [Larry Stokes - N7IBC]

Larry reports that 731 hours were logged across six counties during the Cascadia Rising exercise.

Training sessions will be moving to Friday to resolve other scheduling conflicts.

Larry reports that he plans on attending the District 3 ARES/RACES meeting on July 14th.
